The house is located in a residential area in Ikoma City. The south side of the site is about 3m higher, and the west side is about 1m higher than the site. Such site conditions are commonly seen in Ikoma City, where flat land is scarce. The site is surrounded by houses from all directions, and has poor lighting and views. We sought a bright and open space in this densely populated residential area.
Originally, a hollow square-shaped plan that opens to a courtyard in the center was examined. However, a closer relationship between each room was thought to be more favorable. Therefore, functional boxes were arranged in a staggered manner, and the outside world was incorporated between the boxes.
As a result, the gap spaces between the boxes became a garden-like interior space, or an “in-house courtyard”. Natural light and wind are brought into the house as much as possible from the skylights throughout the house and from the gaps between the boxes. The outside world can be felt in every room. Furthermore, by making a large opening facing the in-house courtyard (appearing as if it was removed from there), and by raising it up a half level, a sense of distance between the rooms was eliminated, and an open-plan-like continuity was obtained, making the space look larger than it really is.
Through the open in-house courtyard that provides continuity, the building will create a rich environment to accept an ever-changing nature and various happenings.
